Warisan

A cloth that remembers who wore it

Batik was inscribed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Long before that, it was a language: motifs signalled rank, marriage, mourning and hope. Nusantara Atelier exists to keep that language current — not framed behind museum glass, but worn to work, to weddings and to the world's capitals.

The Process

Five hands, twenty-one days

  1. 01

    Nyungging

The motif is drawn on paper, negotiating symmetry and symbolism.

  2. 02

    Nglowong

Hot wax is traced line by line with a copper canting.

  3. 03

    Nembok

Areas that must stay undyed are walled off with thicker wax.

  4. 04

    Medel

The cloth bathes in natural indigo, soga bark or mahogany.

  5. 05

    Nglorod

Wax is boiled away, revealing the motif for the first time.
